Short answer: Novanta is a public technology company (NASDAQ: NOVT) that builds the photonics, precision motion, and intelligent vision subsystems used inside industrial equipment. Novanta headquarters is in Bedford, Massachusetts (I checked novanta.com before writing this—finance always asks). The 'Novanta Photonics' side of the business covers laser sources, scan heads, and optical subsystems.

Most end users do not buy from Novanta directly. You buy from an equipment manufacturer who puts Novanta components inside the build. That's why two laser cutters that look similar can perform completely differently. If you're looking at a laser cutter with camera doing registration cuts, there's a good chance a Novanta component is in the signal chain.

Can I buy a laser cutter directly from Novanta?

Usually, no. Novanta is a supplier to the manufacturers that build turnkey machines. I learned this the hard way during a 2022 budget review, when I assumed every laser company sold a complete cutter. Wrong comparison.

If you need a high power laser cutting machine, you'll likely buy from a machine builder and ask what components are inside. If the builder uses reputable photonics and motion control—and that often means Novanta—it's a positive signal. But it is not the same as buying from Novanta, and the machine builder's service support still matters more.

That distinction saves a lot of confusion. Once you know who you're buying from, 'best industrial laser cutter' becomes a much easier question to answer.

Is a laser cutter with camera worth the extra cost?

For us, yes. We added a 60W CO2 laser cutter with camera in 2023 for printed packaging and short-run labeling. The operator loads a sheet, presses 'align,' and the software adjusts the cut path around the printed artwork. Setup time went from roughly 30 minutes to under five. I kept a time log because finance wanted proof.

Is it worth it for every shop? Not necessarily. If you cut the same sheet size every day with no print registration, the camera is a nice-to-have, not a requirement. If you run mixed batches or printed material, it's close to essential.

Ask the vendor one thing: how does the system handle image distortion? A camera alone is not magic. The software has to map the camera view to the actual cutting area. If that correction is sloppy, you'll get misaligned cuts and wasted material.

How much power do I need in a high power laser cutting machine?

Start with material thickness and actual production volume, not with the biggest number on the spec sheet. Five years ago, the common advice was to oversize the power so you'd never get stuck. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. Newer fiber lasers cut thin and mid-range sheet faster at lower power than older high-power machines did.

In the applications we run, a 4kW fiber laser handles most of our stainless and mild steel work up to about 10-12 mm. A 6kW adds margin and speed. A 12kW machine only earns its cost if thick plate is your normal workload. When I compared 6kW and 12kW quotes in November 2024, the price difference was enough to pay for a second, smaller machine.

Power is just one variable. Beam quality, gas consumption, cooling, and maintenance matter too. The fundamentals haven't changed; the execution has.

What is the best industrial laser cutter?

I don't trust anyone who gives a one-word answer. There is no universal 'best.' There's a best machine for your material mix, throughput, floor space, electrical capacity, and support network.

When I evaluate a large purchase, I use a simple scoring sheet:

  • Can the vendor prove throughput on my actual parts?
  • What safety features are included, not optional?
  • How long does a service visit take in my region?
  • Are spare parts stocked locally?
  • What operator training is included?

The fastest cut speed does not automatically win. I've watched a 'best industrial laser cutter' lose points because a basic nozzle took three days to arrive. In the U.S., I also ask for confirmation that the installation follows ANSI Z136.1. That matters more than any marketing number.

What's the most underrated cost of an industrial laser?

Downtime. Not electricity. Not gas. Not even the laser source. Downtime.

The July 2024 breakdown changed how I think about service contracts. A $300 component failed in one of our machines. Because the part had to come from overseas, we waited 19 days. That is 19 days of no production, plus the cost of moving two jobs to a job shop.

Now I ask for a repair history and a recommended spare parts list before I buy. I also ask who answers the phone after the sale. The vendor that ignores you during a sales process? They'll probably ignore you during a breakdown too.

The most frustrating part of buying industrial laser equipment is that two quotes can look identical until something fails. That's when the cheap option stops being cheap. My rule: factor support response time into the price, not just the base machine cost.
